Inheriting a treasured family home from a loved one, allowed our clients to consider what type of home they always wanted, and how they wanted the home to be able to adapt with two rapidly growing boys.

Never having done much renovating or ever built a home we worked closely with our clients to design the home of their dreams. A home that takes full advantage of the coastal aspect and that suits our clients love of entertaining.

The heart of the design for this build was to respect the existing heritage listed worker’s cottage and create a space for a growing family to spread its wings in a modern world. Renovating the front of the house, included tuckpointing and careful restoration of the charming heritage features.

 

To allow the existing worker’s cottage to be the focus of the property, we cleverly created a minimal street frontage to celebrate the old and to create a sense of intrigue of what has been built behind. As a result, the new extension complements and strengthens its position as a heritage listed home by creating gentle connections and spaces that celebrate the beauty of the old, whilst showcasing what a modern build can offer.

 

The seamless connection between old and new was achieved by creating clear site lines. The central courtyard acts as both a connector and a separator for the two parts of the home. Black framed large format sliding doors and windows allow the new space to seamlessly flow outside and toward the worker’s cottage. This allows the owners to reflect on the past lives of the old house and provides an opportunity to appreciate its rustic charm while living in a contemporary space.

 

The palate of materials for this extension was carefully chosen to reflect the rustic South Fremantle aesthetic, but delivered with innovative building techniques. By incorporating passive design elements, northern sun creates winter warmth, and prevailing winds provide passive ventilation that delivers  the best of a Fremantle lifestyle; close to the beach and part of a cosmopolitan city.

This modern elegant home won the 2021 Housing Industry Association Perth Renovation/Addition Project $550,001 - $700,000 - another proud achievement.
